In the 2023 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly election, Sharma contested from the Sanganer constituency and won, becoming a first-time MLA. On 12 December 2023, he was chosen as the Chief Minister-designate, a decision that surprised many. He was officially sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Rajasthan on 15 December 2023.
